Roger Williams plays
as the days dwindle -
we search for kindling
and Oolong tea brews.
The leaves the hue of a barn fire
take a flyer and are tossed;
drift past the window
Roger Williams plays
trees sway in the breeze
pleased to be rid of molting
vegetation in celebration.
Falling leaves of red
and gold embossed with
a time stamp to be trampled
and piled, hours wiled away -
kids at play. Roger Williams too.
Summer kisses forgotten,
hands sun-burned and gnarled
you went away, winter's song
plays. I miss you most darling
when Roger Williams plays.

Jeep, that is a very poignant write. Music can really bring back memories, can't it? Love that the leaves are embossed with a time stamp to be trampled and piled. So much beneath your words!
ReplyDeleteThis piece of music in particular Mary, conveys the beauty of each falling leaf. The cascade of notes adds the movement to an already extraordinary melody. I wondered how one would convey that song with poetic style. I hope I accomplished what I set out to do! Thanks for noticing.
DeleteSummer kisses forgotten - this is full of passion and a forlorn mercy that almost breaks your heart. It really touches the soul. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThe lyric speaks of the sense of loss with melancholy. Autumn will give way to Winter and all we can do is miss what had come before us, Alan. Thanks for stopping by.
Delete:...Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall."
~Johnnie Mercer's English lyric - Autumn Leaves
It's funny; I can almost hear the song ... such a melancholy and bittersweet feel to this one ... sigh.
ReplyDeleteSome memories linger in that way. But still tender moments.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Mark. Roger Williams was one heck of a player and this piece was of of his best. The inspiration came through for me, of that I am appreciative!
DeleteJeep, loved the mention of Autumn Leaves, one of my favorite piano renditions of a song, right up there with Errol Garner's "Misty" and Nat King Cole's "Moonlight in Vermont."
ReplyDeletePlay on, sweet Roger... Amy
